Surface Protection for Architectural & Coated Metals

The Role of Protection Film in Roll-Forming

In architectural applications, the aesthetic integrity of the coating (such as Kynar 500 or SMP) is just as important as the structural integrity of the panel. Surface protection films act as a high-performance barrier that:

  • Absorbs Mechanical Stress: Protects against scratching and "metal-to-metal" marring during the roll-forming process.

  • Lubricates the Die: Reduces friction as the metal passes through forming rollers, preventing "pick-up" on the tooling.

  • UV Resistance: Offers critical protection for panels stored outdoors on job sites before installation.

Technical Requirements

For coated metals, the adhesive chemistry is specialized. It must be balanced to provide enough "tack" to stay on during aggressive bending, but remain stable enough to peel off cleanly—even after exposure to heat and sunlight—without leaving adhesive residue or altering the paint's gloss level.

High-Performance Protection for Coated Metals

The Industry Giants: POLIFILM 1635HS | Novacel Olympeaks | Pregis 2A825C

When dealing with architectural metals, the film must survive more than just transport—it has to endure the mechanical stress of roll-forming and bending. These three films represent the pinnacle of surface protection for the coil coating and construction industries.

1. POLIFILM 1635HS (High Strength)

The 1635HS is a co-extruded polyethylene film engineered for maximum durability. It is the "workhorse" for architectural wall panels and window frames.

  • The Advantage: The "HS" (High Strength) designation means it has superior puncture resistance, preventing metal-on-metal scratching even during aggressive handling.

  • Adhesion: Medium-High tack, perfect for semi-matte or slightly textured industrial paints.

2. Novacel Olympeaks (The Texture Specialist)

Olympeaks is Novacel’s premier range dedicated to matte, rough, and wrinkled pre-coated metals. While standard films struggle to grip "bumpy" surfaces, Olympeaks is engineered to "wet out" into the grain.

  • The Advantage: It offers perfect adhesion to complex textures but is designed to peel off in one piece without tearing, even after months of outdoor exposure.

  • Reliability: Formulated in partnership with major paint manufacturers to ensure 0% adhesive transfer on the latest architectural coatings.

3. Pregis PolyMask 2A825C (A-Series Technology)

Pregis utilizes a proprietary "A-Film" multi-polymer technology that allows for a thinner gauge with significantly higher tensile strength than standard PE films.

  • The Advantage: It provides "A2-grade" performance—offering high abrasion resistance and incredible elongation (it can stretch up to 600% during deep drawing or complex bending without snapping).

  • The "A-Film" Edge: Thinner than traditional films but tougher, making it more efficient for high-volume coil processing.
