1. Storage Environment (The "Golden Rules")
Surface protection films are sensitive to temperature and UV exposure.
-
Temperature Control: Store all rolls between 50°F and 80°F (10°C - 27°C). Extreme heat can cause the adhesive to "soften," leading to edge-ooze or permanent bonding (blocking).
-
Humidity: Maintain a dry environment (relative humidity of 50% is ideal). Excessive moisture can affect the release liners or core stability.
-
UV Protection: Never store rolls in direct sunlight or near open bay doors. Even UV-stable films should be kept indoors in their original packaging until use to prevent "pre-aging" of the adhesive.
2. Physical Handling & Placement
-
Vertical vs. Horizontal: Large rolls should be stored horizontally on a rack system that supports the core (using a pipe through the center) or on cradles.
-
Why? Storing a heavy roll vertically on its "end" can cause the film to telescope or damage the edges, leading to breaks on the customer's applicator line.
-
-
Edge Protection: The edges of the film are the most vulnerable. A single nick or dent in the side of a roll can cause the film to tear repeatedly during high-speed application. Always use the original plastic end-caps provided by the manufacturer.
-
Ground Contact: Never store rolls directly on a concrete floor. Concrete can "wick" moisture and cold. Always use pallets or racking.
3. Inventory Rotation (FIFO)
Adhesive chemistry has a shelf life. Industrial Applications Packaging Company follows the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method.
-
Shelf Life: Most acrylic and rubber adhesives have a peak performance window of 12 months from the date of manufacture.
-
Labeling: Every roll must have a visible label showing the Manufacturer (Polifilm/Pregis/Novacel), Product Code, and Date Received.
